In case you're waiting for ancestry.com or familysearch.org to get the 1950 census indexed and searchable, here's a better idea: the U.S. government has its own site and it's already searchable by name. Unlike the other websites, downloads are provided in several resolutions. I just learned of this and don't know what's available for other census years. For a long time I've been using the collection at archives.org, which is totally free, because several resolutions are available. I find the page and Enumeration District that I want by searching on familysearch.org, then look it up on archive.org. This U.S. government site reminds me of the Canada census site which is free and pretty easy to use. What's really nice about the Canada census site is that your download is snappy, pages load quickly because they're not connecting you to a bunch of sites to try and extract market statistics from you or your computer, so it's fast compared to the usual sources.
