This thread is for questions that noobs like me with no formal computer science background are not easily going to find. I'll ask questions in this post and anyone can post answers as a reply. If someone has questions of their own, they can be posted here too. There are no stupid questions when it comes to GEDCOM.
UNANSWERED QUESTIONS ABOUT GEDCOM
1. Specs and discussions about GEDCOM are mentioning character sets such as Unicode, Ansel, etc. Encoding for Unicode includes UTF-8 for example. What does it mean to support a character set? Is it true that only Unicode or UTF-8 is now correct, or does that depend on the GEDCOM version? Is this topic relevant only to creating a GEDCOM file for export, or does it also apply to import files? What kind of magic is done behind the scenes when (for example) `1 CHAR ANSEL` is placed in the head of a GEDCOM file; this is just a text file, isn't it? How does that line of text do anything?
