A Heaton was the first surveyor of the part of Putnam County where Joseph and Sarah Heaton raised their family. A Runyan was one of the first two settlers there. But finding the ancestors of Joseph and Sarah Heaton two has had me stumped for a long time.
Sarah's parents are Daniel Runyan and Mary "Polly" Tidd who can be found in Roundhead Township, Hardin County, Ohio living in a nest of Tidds next door to Joseph and Sarah Heaton. The only thing I know about Joseph that isn't easily found online is that he was born in Richland County, Ohio back when it was a huge county. This information is second-hand from someone who bought his Civil War record from NARA or wherever people buy civil war records. I haven't seen the documents from NARA so I have to say this info is second-hand. I have no idea who his parents are.
Sarah's first child, Samuel Jacob Heaton, was the only person in the family born in Indiana. From the same source as the civil war record, Samuel was born in "maybe Steuben County" with no hint as to where this theory comes from. Possibly either Sarah or Joseph could have had an earlier marriage.
Sarah had a child when she was a young woman who she had to pass on to a foster parent named Enos Bradbury who then didn't give the child back or stay in touch. When Joseph was 90 years old, he and Sarah took off on a journey to try to find this child. I don't know how that turned out, but since Enos Bradbury is not a common name, he was easy to find in these days of online databases. The only Enos Bradbury who fits is one who raised an adopted son named Charles Greenough. It's possible that, since they didn't rename the child "Bradbury", his biological father's name was a Charles Greenough. The father is mentioned in the attached article. Since the theoretical father Charles Greenough lives near Bradbury and not near Sarah R. Heaton, there might be more to the story than the article states. I'm guessing that Bradbury knew the father and came to ask for the child when the father died, since Enos and his wife were childless.
There are more details available upon request about Sarah and Joseph Heaton. The attached article is priceless. My main goal is to find the parents of Joseph Heaton, Daniel Runyan, and Polly Tidd. I've learned a lot about Runyans and Heatons in the process but there are no solid leads yet.
